Have you ever heard of a cover letter? It’s a “letter of motivation” which you send to an employer along with your résumé or your curriculum vitae. It’s a great opportunity to set you apart from the other candidates. You can let your personality show a little bit more in your cover letter than you can in a simple résumé. Just don’t get carried away!

The cover letter is important because it’s your chance to convince the person reading it to look at your résumé or curriculum vitae. If it is not well-written and targeted to the reader and their company, it is not likely that they will even look at your résumé.

The most important factor of a cover letter is that it is the best way for you to express interest in the position. You must prove to the person who is reading the letter that you are interested in the job and that you know about the company you are applying to. Write the letter in a way that your personality is properly reflected, albeit in a formal manner.

Be careful not to create a “one-size-fits-all” (la lettre type, lettre que tout le monde a tendance à produire) cover letter. If you do this, it will be clear and the person in charge of hiring candidates will feel that you are uncreative, even if you are the most creative person in the world!

Now that we know what a cover letter is and what purpose it serves, let’s look at what you should ideally include in your cover letter.

Remember that you should not simply repeat information that can already be found in your résumé. Your cover letter should illustrate your experience with examples, but you should be more creative and capture the interest of the person in charge of hiring. In the cover letter you have the opportunity to summarize your career and show that you’re an expert in your field. Prove to the person who is reading your letter that you have the qualifications to meet the requirements for the job which you are applying for. However, remember that you should keep the letter short. If not, the person reading the letter will likely get bored!

Since the cover letter is less limited than a résumé is, it’s a great chance for you to be able to express your worldview and talk about your achievements which will help your candidacy for the position.

It is also important to express that you will get in touch with the company to follow up on your application. Getting in touch with the company after sending them your application is a great way to show that your interest in the company is authentic.

When writing your cover letter, you must try to avoid the following common mistakes.

Remember, again, you must be brief. Express yourself in the fewest, most eloquent words possible. Don’t be wordy. Make sure to only put the most fundamental information in the letter. Capture the reader’s attention as soon as possible. Remember, they must read a lot of letters so if yours stands out, you stand much more of a chance to be hired or, at least, called for an interview!

If you don’t know who the letter should be addressed to, avoid the ever –so-common “To whom it may concern” or “Dear hiring manager/sir or madam.” Both sound silly. If you can’t find who you should properly address the letter to, just start the letter!

You should also remember that you mustn’t start the letter by stating your name and that you would like to apply for the position you are applying for. It is a waste of precious text space and the person who is reading the letter already knows which position you are applying for.

While it can be quite difficult to do properly, writing an effective cover letter gets easier with practice. If you are still confused about what you should include – or not include – in your letter, just search the internet for “cover letter tips.” There are plenty of websites that can help you with the structure of your letter and give you good suggestions for what you should include.

It is also very important that you remember that the requirements for cover letters vary from country to country. If you are applying for an international position, spend some time researching what cover letters are like in the country where you would like to work!

Best of luck!
